1 John 4:1 – Testing the spirits

Beloved ones, do not believe every spirit, but prove the spirits, whether they are of Elohim, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.

In this article, I will do my best to show you how the devil will try and deceive you, in many possible ways, and will show you how you can tell if that prophet or teacher is really of God, or not.
‘Beloved ones, do not believe every spirit, but prove the spirits, whether they are of Elohim, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.‘ (1 John) 4:1
But how can you recognize them? There are plenty of false teachers and prophets who are very obvious, but what about the wolves in sheepskin?
‘But beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are savage wolves.’ (Matthew) 7:15
When was the last time you tested your teacher, preacher, or even those called prophets? I know that personally when I first came to the faith, I believed what was taught by my parent’s church, their pastors, and from there, I went to other churches. No one at any time taught us on how to tell the real from the fake. And I believed everything that was taught to me because it came from the Holy Bible. Even Paul’s teachings were tested by the Jews, to see if what he was saying was true.
‘Now these were more noble than those in Thessalonike, who received the word with great eagerness, and searched the Scriptures daily, if these words were so.‘ (Acts) 17:11
Those who tested the teachings of Paul, tested using the scriptures that were available to them. His teachings had to align with those in the Old Testament (there were no other scriptures at the time). Brothers and sisters, do not believe everyone who uses scriptures to teach. Don’t forget that even Satan knows God’s Word very well.
‘And he brought Him to Yerushalayim, set Him on the edge of the Set-apart Place, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of Elohim, throw Yourself down from here, for it has been written, ‘He shall command His messengers concerning You, to guard over You,’ and, ‘In their hands they shall bear You up, lest You dash Your foot against a stone.’ ” And Yeshua answering, said to him, “It has been said, ‘You shall not try YHWH your Elohim.’ ”’ (Luke) 4:9-12
Satan just used 2 parts of scripture against the Messiah. He will use more than that against you.
‘“For false messiahs and false prophets shall arise, and they shall show great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the chosen ones.‘ (Matthew) 24:24
Notice that these false prophets will have authority to show great signs and wonders… but they are not of God.
‘“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Master, Master,’ shall enter into the reign of the heavens, but he who is doing the desire of My Father in the heavens. “Many shall say to Me in that day, ‘Master, Master, have we not prophesied in Your Name, and cast out demons in Your Name, and done many mighty works in Your Name?’ “And then I shall declare to them, ‘I never knew you, depart from Me, you who work lawlessness!’’ (Matthew) 7:21-23
So here Yeshua is telling His disciples that only those doing the desire of His Father in the heavens will enter the reign of the heavens. And many who have prophesied in His name, cast out demons in His name, and done mighty works in His name, will be rejected. And the only reason He gives, it is because they work lawlessness.
The definition of lawlessness is as follows:  state of disorder due to a disregard of the law, contrary or without regard to the law. I will come back to that in just a moment. I want to show you that a prophet can give signs and wonders and not be of God even going back to the Old Testament. And why this might happen.
‘“When there arises among you a prophet or a dreamer of dreams, and he shall give you a sign or a wonder, and the sign or the wonder shall come true, of which he has spoken to you, saying, ‘Let us go after other mighty ones – which you have not known – and serve them,’ do not listen to the words of that prophet or that dreamer of dreams, for YHWH your Elohim is trying you to know whether you love YHWH your Elohim with all your heart and with all your being. “Walk after YHWH your Elohim and fear Him, and guard His commands and obey His voice, and serve Him and cling to Him.’ (Deuteronomy) 13:1-4
God is trying you, to see whether you love Him with all your heart and with all your being. He connects our love to Him directly to obedience, to guard His commands and obey His voice.
‘“If you love Me, you shall guard My commands.‘ (John) 14:15
While God was giving the 10 commandments on Mount Sinai, He also spoke about our love towards Him.
‘but showing loving-commitment to thousands, to those who love Me and guard My commands.‘ (Exodus) 20:6
There are verses all over the New Testament and Old Testament, all relating our love for God to the obedience of His commands. After all, Yeshua summed up everything in 2 commands: Loving God with all your heart and being and loving your neighbor. Loving God = obeying Him.
Now, this teaching is not about salvation. Nor does it teach that you are saved because you obey God’s commands. Salvation by works is a false teaching.
But this teaching is closely related to the Great Commission:
‘Therefore, go and make taught ones of all the nations, immersing them in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Set-apart Spirit, teaching them to guard all that I have commanded you. And see, I am with you always, until the end of the age.” Amĕn.’ (Matthew) 28:19-20
And this is the Word, announced as Good News to you. because “All flesh is as grass, and all the esteem of man as the flower of the grass. The grass withers, and its flower falls away, Now that you have cleansed your lives in obeying the truth through the Spirit to unfeigned brotherly love, love one another fervently with a clean heart, having been born again – not of corruptible seed, but incorruptible – through the living Word of Elohim, which remains forever,’ Kĕpha Aleph (1 Peter) 1:22-25
Peter was quoting Isaiah 40:6-8 right here. And this is directly related to the Good News!
We all know that God does not change. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
Anyone teaching you lawlessness is a false teacher. They were probably also taught all of these false teachings. I am not here to point fingers if their teachings are intentional or not. We are all part of the Body of the Messiah, and are here to help each other out in walking the narrow path.
‘“I know your works, and your labour, and your endurance, and that you are not able to bear evil ones, and have tried those who say they are emissaries and are not, and have found them false; and you have been bearing up and have endurance, and have laboured for My Name’s sake and have not become weary.’ (Revelation) 2:2-3
Have you tested the emissaries to see if they are true or false?
I hope this has blessed you and can bless others around you.
